What is the treatment for perinatal anxiety?

This website offers practical skills to help you manage common stresses and anxieties during pregnancy and early parenthood. However, you might find you need additional support to feel fully better; particularly if your anxiety in interfering with your day-to-day life.

Self-help Resources

Self-help resources, such as those in the self-help section of this site, can be helpful for people experiencing mild-to-moderate symptoms. More in-depth digital CBT programmes and evidence-based self-help books are also available. Digital CBT can be particularly useful and fit well into the busy lives of families. 

Talking Therapies

Talking therapies, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), delivered either in groups or individually, and mindfulness-based approaches are often the first line of treatment for people experiencing concerning symptoms that cannot be managed using self-help tools.

Medication

Medication, such as antidepressants or anti-anxiety medicines can be useful for some people struggling with anxiety symptoms. Your doctor can advise you on which medications are safe and appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Your GP, midwife or health visitor can help you understand which options may suit your symptoms best and will talk you through the pros and cons of each, so you can make an informed decision.
